The distance between Phitsanulok Railway Station and Chiang Mai Railway Station is around 340km. The trip duration is about 6 to 8 hours, depends on the type of train that you chose. Special Express train is faster when compared with the other two, and the fastest train departs at 1.22PM (13:22) with estimated duration of 6 hours and 10 minutes. The slowest train is the Rapid train that departs at 8.37PM (20:37). With estimated duration of 7 hours and 30 minutes, the train that departs at 8.37PM from Phitsanulok should reach Chiang Mai around 4AM.

Departure Point – Phitsanulok Railway Station

The location of the Phitsanulok Railway Station is in the heart of the Phitsanulok city. Therefore, it is very convenient for the passengers to go to the train station. If you happen to arrive early to the departure point, you can walk around and see the shops around the train station too. There is a market that sells food to the left of the train station. To go to the train station, you can take tuk tuk or taxi around the town. Make sure to agree on the price or use a metered taxi before you board. Local buses also pass by the train station. There is also bus service that connects the train station to the bus terminal. Please note that there are two bus terminals in Phitsanulok. Phitsanulok Bus Terminal 2 is much more far away from the city center. If you are taking bus from Sukhothai, choose to drop off in the Old Phitsanulok Bus Terminal. The old bus terminal is just around 3km away from the train station.

Arrival Point – Chiang Mai Railway Station

The location of Chiang Mai Railway Station is in the city of Chiang Mai, although a bit far from the Old City Moat. Upon arrival at the Chiang Mai Railway Station, you can hire a tuk tuk or take songthaew to go to your hotel or your next destination. Tuk tuk would cost around 100-200 Baht, depends on the distance and your bargaining skill. Songthaews is a cheaper option from as low as 20 Baht. Songthaews works like a minivan and pickup many passengers per ride. Ask the driver whether they are heading to you destination or not before you board.


There will be toilet on-board for the convenience of the passengers. You can also buy food from the canteen, which would cost from 100 Baht for breakfast and 200 Baht for dinner. Alternatively, you can buy food before you board the train. There will be some vendors selling food on the train as well when the train stops to pick up and drop off passengers in some train stations. Clean pillow and blanket will be provided for all passengers taking the sleeper train. The staffs will turn the seat to bed when the night approaches.
